Safeguarding in British Functional Fitness: Creating a Safer Sport and Community
Safeguarding is at the core of British Functional Fitness’s commitment to providing a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all participants. Together Becky & Hannah have developed comprehensive safeguarding policies aimed at protecting Junior, Adaptive, Master athletes, and the wider functional fitness community. These policies reflect the values of safety, inclusion, and well-being, aligning with guidance. By establishing robust practices, we are ensuring that British Functional Fitness sets the standard for safeguarding in sport.
Safe environment
Safeguarding goes beyond policies, it’s about creating environments where all participants feel safe and empowered. British Functional Fitness’s approach emphasises effective systems such as clear procedures for handling safeguarding concerns, safe recruitment practices, and regular training for staff and volunteers. We also focus on inclusive practices, tailoring activities and safeguards to the needs of vulnerable groups, ensuring accessibility and inclusion. Additionally, safeguarding is a shared responsibility, with coaches, volunteers, and staff working together to uphold a safe, respectful, and positive sporting environment.
Focus on youth
Young athletes are the future of functional fitness, and their safety is central to our policies. We’ve implemented measures to ensure their well-being, such as mandatory safeguarding training and clear emergency protocols. Open communication channels are vital, encouraging athletes to voice concerns to safeguarding officers or trusted adults. In addition, our digital safety measures include restricting private messaging between staff and under-18s, educating athletes about online risks, and securing personal data. These protections allow young athletes to compete, train, and grow confidently in a secure environment.
Vulnerable groups
Functional fitness welcomes participants of all ages and abilities, and our policies are designed to address their specific needs. Vulnerable adults & young people are supported with individualised risk assessments, tailored activities, and a welcoming environment. By addressing the needs of these groups, we ensure that functional fitness remains a sport for everyone.
Digital Safety & Ongoing review

In today’s digital world, safeguarding extends beyond the gym. Our Online Safety and Social Media Policy protects athletes by establishing clear boundaries for communication between staff and participants. We educate athletes and staff about online risks, including harassment and privacy concerns, and promote secure and respectful digital interactions for all. This holistic approach ensures that safeguarding principles are upheld both online and offline.
To further strengthen our safeguarding efforts, we are proud to announce our partnership with Circle21.app, an innovative platform for event organisers. This collaboration allows us to become the first in the functional fitness space to implement parental consent at the sign-up stage. By integrating this feature into our online qualifier process, we ensure that all youth participants have obtained the necessary parental permission before competing. Additionally, this partnership provides us with the tools to manage media and privacy consent effectively, enabling us to protect young athletes and uphold safeguarding standards throughout our events.
Affiliate support
To extend these safeguards beyond British Functional Fitness, we encourage all affiliated gyms and clubs to adopt our policies. By doing so, they contribute to a stronger, more inclusive community and ensure the safety of all participants. These policies provide a framework for gyms to maintain a safe and supportive environment where athletes of all ages and abilities can thrive.
Safeguarding is a shared and ongoing responsibility. At British Functional Fitness, we review our policies annually, incorporating feedback, new legislation, and best practices. By collaborating with external organisations like the CPSU, we ensure we remain at the forefront of safeguarding in sport.
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Together, we can create a functional fitness community that prioritises safety, inclusivity, and well-being for athletes of all ages and abilities.
