Guidance on Sponsorship and National Team Kit Requirements for World Championships

As a National Governing Body, we are committed to ensuring the best experience for all our athletes. Part of representing your country is that you get to wear your country’s recognised uniform. That is why we require that all athletes representing the UK on the international scene (i.e. iF3 Euro’s and iF3 Worlds) comply with our official team kit requirements. Wearing national team clothing ensures we maintain uniformity, uphold national identity, and adhere to the international governing body regulations. However, we recognise that this may sometimes create conflicts with personal sponsorship agreements that require athletes to display sponsor branding during competitions.

To help athletes navigate these potential conflicts, we provide guidance on how to approach sponsorship negotiations while ensuring compliance with national team obligations.

National Team Kit Rules and Regulations

All athletes selected to represent the UK on the international scene (i.e. iF3 Euro’s and iF3 Worlds) must wear the designated national team kit - we have secured a 4 year contract with the Defiant Co. to provide  top quality gear for our  athletes. We also have these rules are in place to:

  • Ensure a unified and professional national presence.
  • Prevent unauthorised commercial influence during competition.
  • Align with international regulations set by organisations such as IF3, Sport Accord, and the IOC (International Olympic Committee).

Failure to comply with these regulations may result in disqualification and further sanctions. It is crucial for athletes to be fully aware of these requirements before entering into sponsorship agreements.

We are able to accommodate sponsors requirements in select photo and video opportunities to be agreed with the BF3 before the event. Athletes are urged to contact BF3 at the earliest opportunity to discuss on events@bf3.sport.

Impact on Sponsorship Agreements

BF3 recognises that personal sponsorship agreements are an essential part of an athlete’s career, providing financial and logistical support. However, when representing Team UK at an international event, certain sponsorship obligations may be restricted due to:

  • Apparel Restrictions: National team kits do not allow additional branding beyond the official Team UK sponsor logo.
  • Logo Placement Limitations: Sponsors may expect visibility, but competition rules prohibit non-official branding.
  • Media Commitments: Sponsorship agreements may include obligations to wear branded clothing in interviews, which could be restricted when representing the national team.

Best Practices for Athletes in Sponsorship Negotiations

To ensure compliance with national team regulations while maintaining positive sponsor relationships, athletes are advised to:

  1. Include Clauses for National Team Representation
    • Ensure sponsorship agreements clearly state exemptions for events where national team kit is mandatory.
    • Make sponsors aware of the governing body’s regulations from the outset.
  2. Negotiate Alternative Branding Opportunities
    • Explore options such as branding on training gear, warm-up clothing, or casual wear where permitted.
    • Offer promotional exposure through social media, personal appearances, or exclusive sponsor content.
  3. Communicate Early with Sponsors and Governing Bodies
    • Inform sponsors as early as possible about your commitments to the national team and the associated restrictions.
    • Consult as soon as possible with the BF3 as the national governing body to clarify any potential flexibility regarding branding opportunities.
  4. Leverage Post-Competition Promotion
    • Arrange for sponsor-branded activations following the Euro and World Championships, such as interviews, social media endorsements, or public appearances in sponsor gear.
  5. Seek Legal and Managerial Guidance
    • Work with a legal expert or sports agent to draft contracts that balance sponsorship requirements with national team obligations.

Conclusion

Representing the UK at the Euro’s and World Championship is a prestigious honour that comes with specific obligations, including compliance with national team kit regulations. By planning ahead, negotiating sponsorship agreements carefully, and exploring alternative branding opportunities, athletes can successfully manage both their personal sponsorship commitments and their opportunities with and responsibilities to the national team.

We encourage all athletes to engage with their sponsors and our governing body to ensure a seamless and professional experience at the highest level of competition. For further guidance, please contact us on events@bf3.sport
