About BF3

British Functional Fitness Federation (BF3) is the UK’s National Governing Body (NGB) for Functional Fitness.

BF3 is not-for-profit and it was established in 2016. BF3 is formerly known as FRF UK (Fitness Racing Federation UK), which is still legally our trading name. We are actively seeking recognition for the sport of functional fitness in the UK with Sport England. We provide governance and we regulate the sport in the UK, representing and protecting the interests of all stakeholders in the competitive functional fitness community.

BF3 is an active member of iF3 (International Functional Fitness Federation). The iF3 is the sole World Governing Body for the sport of Functional Fitness. The iF3 is actively seeking membership from Sport Accord to enable recognition by the IOC (International Olympic Committee).

The iF3 is an active member of The Association For International Sport For All (TAFISA), which is an IOC recognized organisation, and is in conversations with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) about the application process for becoming a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code.

What is our mission?

Our vision is to create a sustainable sport for the benefit of the community, in support of the government’s broader policy objective of getting more people active and healthy.

We seek to make the sport more professional, providing a commercially viable structure for athletes, coaches and support staff, gym owners, and business owners.

Our mission is to achieve recognition by the Sports Councils of the Home Nations that competitive functional fitness is a sport, and to seek public funding for the implementation of our Whole Sport Plan.

We are also supporting the International Functional Fitness Federation (iF3) in its pursuit to be a part of the Olympic programme in Brisbane 2032.

What ARE our goals?

Our key goals include but are not limited to:

  • Organising and promoting the development of competitive functional fitness in the UK
  • Achieving recognition by Sport England as the NGB for competitive functional fitness in the UK
  • Selecting, preparing, training and supporting UK athletes and teams to compete in regional and international competitions
  • Organising British and World Championships in the UK
  • Lobbying for the inclusion of competitive functional fitness in major international multi-sport events, e.g. FISU, the Commonwealth Games, and the Olympic Games
  • Representing competitive functional fitness communities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as the voting member of the iF3

As part of our mission to promote and grow competitive functional fitness across all of our Home Nations, we specifically aim to:

  • Display the highest level of professionalism at all times, including in the areas of athleticism, coaching, judging, and governance of the sport
  • Grow competitive functional fitness in size through a grass roots method of sport development
  • Be a Centre of Excellence for the development of the sport
  • Enable coaches and athletes to focus solely on their craft and doing what they do best i.e. coaching and competing.

BF3 is an active member of iF3. The iF3 is the sole world governing body for the sport of Functional Fitness. The iF3 was actively seeking membership from the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) since 2018 before its dissolution in November of 2022. Since that time, the iF3 has been waiting for a new membership process to begin so that we can continue our journey toward recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

iF3 have been informed that SportAccord will be taking over the membership process formerly overseen by GAISF. Sport Accord have recently shared preliminary criteria but are yet to finalise the details for new membership criteria, process and submission of membership applications.

The iF3 is an active member of The Association For International Sport For All (TAFISA), which is an IOC recognized organisation, and is in conversations with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) about the application process for becoming a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code.

15 of the iF3’s National Federations are already recognised by the National Sporting Authority or the National Olympic Committee in their respective countries. The national recognition of our sport is critical to its growth and development worldwide.
